I’m 33 years old, and I still struggle with acne. It honestly is the biggest hit in confidence sometimes. I’ve worked the last few years on clearing it, speaking to professionals & changing the products I use. I have learned SO MUCH. For example, did you know that you should change your pillowcase every 2 days? And use a silk one for that matter because it doesn’t hold bacteria?! Or that you shouldn’t use a towel to dry your face, use a paper towel instead!
I have also learned about the power of food and nutrients. Here are some vitamins that help with acne!
Zinc: zinc is great for acne. It can be found in foods like ginger root, oats, shrimp and almonds.
B2: Vitamin B2 is crucial for healing acne. It can be found in mushrooms, tuna, salmon, squash and cauliflower.
Vitamin A: You’ll want to eat foods high in vitamin A, which includes carrots, sweet potato, pumpkin, melon and broccoli.
After speaking to my dermatologist 2 weeks ago, she suggested 3 options:
Going on an antibiotic. That was a HARD NO for me. I have worked so long to repair my gut. I know way too much about the power of the gut microbiome to go on an antibiotic willingly.
Spironolactone. It’s a blood pressure medication that is said to help decrease acne. My first question was, does it treat the root cause? The dermatologist said 99% of people said their acne improved, however when they went off of it, it came right back. I thought, wow, that sounds like a waste of time. I’m not looking for a bandaid, I am looking to heal from within. Hard pass, especially being a medication for blood pressure.
Change the diet. I was intrigued but also scared of what she was going to say. She said that most people find the culprit it sugar, dairy and/or gluten. Ugh. My heart sank. I honestly love all of those things and eat them on a daily basis. I love my greek yogurt, cottage cheese & string cheese snacks. I love my sourdough bread and crackers with cheese. And I absolutely love my nightly dessert, either a cupcake, candy bar or ice cream. I am a sweet tooth girl.
After learning that I could eliminate those foods for 8 weeks, and introduce them back one at a time, I could find my answer of the culprit. I knew it was going to be hard.
I came home and chatted with Troy. He knows how much my face triggers my mood & suggested he join in with me for the support. After all, it’s so much easier to do something like this when you have your partner on board. For example, NOT suggesting “let’s go get ice cream” lol
So far it’s been 7 days. I have seen a drastic improvement in my skin. I do have to say, I was really disciplined for 6 days. On day 7, I had a hard day, I was in the car the whole day, eating at different peoples houses with not many options and felt so hungry. I ate flatbread with cheese & a piece of cake. Oh well. Move on.
Throughout these next 8 weeks I want to stay upfront & honest with this journey. I want to share my favorite snacks, how I am feeling both on the outside and inside. I look forward to sharing my mistakes, and keeping it real. If you want to join in on the sugar, gluten and dairy free challenge, follow me on Instagram!
What I am making this week!
Buffalo Chicken Tenders!
low-carb and paleo, with 50g protein & 2g carbs per serving!
there’s no breading!
perfect on a salad, in a wrap, or dipping into ranch!
much healthier than deep frying, and it uses no oil!
What I’m obsessed with..
Our Place Wonder Oven
It’s pretty obvious I am obsessed. This compact and retro-looking 6-in-1 wonder machine not only air fries, roasts, bakes, toasts, reheats and steams. But it also frees up your countertops by combining all these functionalities into one sleek appliance.
If you’re anything like me, you also care about the quality of the product. One reason I love this air fryer is that it’s free of Teflon, PFAS, and other potentially toxic materials so you can feel safe cooking in it for yourself & your family. You can read my full review here!
Ok, let’s get to the new recipe!👇🏼
New recipe - GF Bruschetta Toast!
This is a great gluten, dairy and sugar free snack that packs a ton of flavor. I used to make it when I was a private chef for retreats. The runners loved these as a post workout snack, and I always made it gluten free!
